Decoration inspired by the Byzantine era

Two birds in one stone!

The talented luthier Dimitris Markrishttps://www.makris-instruments.gr/en/homepage/) sent me yesterday few photos from the progress of his unique laouto-bouzouko, showcasing the superb skills he possesses regarding the creation of complex pick-guard designs.

This latest bouzouki, carries a challenging and difficult pick-guard theme , which requires  the use of a conundrum of elements and materials as : natural White Sea-shell , curly maple, apple wood, and pear wood.

The pick-guard theme ( The two birds and the flowers)  is inspired by the Byzantine era.

The design has been used in the latest publication of the book “ The History of Rebetiko “ which is now ( book) , in the printing process of its second successful edition !

With the finalization of the bowl construction, the beautiful and hard to find grain (with chrisalida) of the mulberry staves, makes its imposing presence and reveals its irresistible beauty, long before the finalization of the bouzouki construction and the application of Shellac!

Stay tuned !
