Part II- The Odyssey of recreating an A. Stathopoulos original hard case
The hard-to-find hardware!
The difficult task of finding and collecting the necessary hardware for the 1910s A. Stathopoulos hard case replica, has come successfully to an end.
Someone may assume that finding a couple of old style latches, hinges and locks, would be an easy task. But this is not really the case.
The market is saturated with wannabe "antique style " hardware products, which in reality are very far from the quality, the shape, and the style of the hardware that the original cases were carrying during the prewar era.
And with a "superficial" only research, someone can easily fall into the trap, using style and quality of hardware which never been used during the 1910s-1920s
A careful observation in survived /rescued old musical instrument cases and catalogs, can cast the necessary light which someone will need for the correct choice of the 1910s hardware
1. Latches
Most of us when thinking about vintage musical instrument latches our mind goes to the following style.
But this is the much later style of latches which was used on musical instrument cases
The correct style of latches used during the A Stathopoulos era is instead one of the following
2. Hinges
Almost everyone has heard before the vintage butterfly style of hinges. The following example is a wrong misrepresentation of a vintage butterfly hinge used back in 1910s
The correct style of butterfly hinges used during the A Stathopoulos era is instead the following3. Lock
Finally, most of us when thinking about vintage musical instrument locks our mind goes to the following styles.
Instead, the lock of A Stathopoulos hard cases was the following
Now, finding "around the world" all these isolated pieces and at a very close finished /polished look to each other (so they can create a complete set) , was a substantial and costly task by itself !
