Luthier's extra mile

Revival of the beautiful old tailpiece!

The talented luthier  Stelios Tsilimigkas, ( https://steliostsilimigkas.wixsite.com/luthier) sent me today more photos from  the pre-war trichordo's progress.

He first installed and glued the ebony fret-board on the instrument's neck. He also cut the fret slots,  shaped, and glued the fret inlays.

The luthier then formed and glued the head-stock on the neck, created the wooden "tie" (made by burl walnut wood ), and finalized the shape of the capping strips by installing lengthwise, double wooden fillets.

Going the extra mile, Stelios revived a very old Sea-Shell shaped tailpiece, by sanding it and by applying nickel coating. The old tailpiece now reveals its beautiful luster.

Finally, the luthier applied  impregnation (with casein and rabbit glue) on the bowl.

And as the tradition requires, Stelios will varnish his instrument with the difficult and time consuming technique of "Gomolaka with mpala" (Shellac application with muneca also called 'rubber').Stay tuned !
